Full squad →About Paul Gustard
Paul Gustard is the head coach of Stade Français Paris, promoted from defence coach in October 2024 and under contract to 2027 with an option for a further year. He reports to Director of Rugby Thomas Lombard.
Born in Newcastle upon Tyne in February 1976, he was a back-row flanker for Leicester Tigers, where he won four English titles and the 2001 Heineken Cup, then London Irish and Saracens. He captained England Under-21 but was never capped at senior level.
The defence specialist
He coached at Saracens from 2008 under Brendan Venter and Eddie Jones, building the aggressive blitz defence that became the club’s signature and winning two Premiership titles as an assistant. He was England’s defence coach from 2015 to 2018 through the 2016 Grand Slam, then Head of Rugby at Harlequins until January 2021, and worked at Benetton before joining Stade Français in 2022.
Paris
He is widely credited with resurrecting the club, taking them to the Top 14 semi-finals in June 2026. Lombard has described the approach as methodical and English — something the club has adapted rather than copied.
Style
Defence first, structured and detail-heavy. He has not yet won a trophy as a head coach.
