About Jono Gibbes

Jono Gibbes is the head coach of the Gallagher Chiefs, announced in July 2025 and in charge from the 2026 season. He took them to the final at the first attempt, losing 60–5 to the Hurricanes. He is contracted to the end of 2027.

Born in January 1977 and raised in Te Awamutu, he was a blindside flanker and lock for Waikato and the Chiefs, captaining the franchise for six seasons from 2003 to 2008. He won eight All Blacks Tests and captained the Māori All Blacks to their historic 2005 win over the British & Irish Lions.

A decorated coaching CV

He was Leinster’s forwards coach from 2008 through the foundation era of their European dominance, winning three Heineken Cups and two Pro12 titles. He then won the Top 14 with Clermont as forwards coach in 2017, had a short and unhappy spell as Ulster head coach, took Waikato up as champions in 2018, and was director of rugby at La Rochelle before a spell as Clermont head coach that ended in January 2023.

He returned to the Chiefs as forwards coach ahead of 2024 and was promoted two years later.
